The somewhat famous picture above is of a woman named Heiden but we do not know if she is any relation to our branch of the family...yet. From the portrait, we might guess that was born around 1750-1760.  It is black chalk drawing on paper which was created circa 1798 by a German Romantic artist named Caspar David Friedrich.

In German the title is Bildnis der Mutter Heiden which translates to Portrait of Mother Heiden in English. The woman was Dorothea Elisabeth Heiden who was a domestic housekeeper for Friedrich. The original portrait is in the Pommersches Landesmuseum in Greifswald, Germany where Friedrich lived at the time the portrait was created. This is about 60 miles north of Gross Wokern where August Heiden was born..

According to Wikipedia, Friedrich was "...generally considered the most important German artist of his generation, whose often symbolic, and anti-classical work, conveys a subjective, emotional response to the natural world. Friedrich's paintings often set contemplative human figures silhouetted against night skies, morning mists, barren trees or Gothic ruins."
